Overview

Rajasthan, known as “the land of kings”, is the largest state of the Republic of India by area. It is located in the northwest of India. It comprises most of the area of the large, inhospitable Thar Desert. Thar Desert also known as the Great Indian Desert, which parallels the Sutlej Indus River valley along its border with Pakistan to the west. Rajasthan covers 10.4% of India, an area of 342,239 square kilometres (132,139 sq. mi). Rajasthan was formed on 30 March 1949, when the region known until then as Rajputana consisting of erstwhile 18 principally sates Ajmer-Merwara principal status of two chiefships and the British district of Ajmer – Merwana. Its heritage, culture, safaris, sand dunes, lush forests and wildlife-makes it destination nonpareil. India’s oldest mountain range as the backdrop; feast your eyes on spectacular sand dunes, take the tiger trail, or just watch the birds in the wetlands. The climate varies throughout Rajasthan. On average winter temperatures range from 8° to 28° C (46° to 82° F) and summer temperatures range from 25° to 46° C (77° to 115° F).
